The office offers two different types of conscious sedation: MillCalm and nitrous oxide.
Mill Calm
This first option was developed by Dr. Nicholas J. Meyer, founder of Millennium Dental Associates. It is a combination of 5 things that aim to create a deep state of relaxation and help patient with dental anxiety. Here are the components of MillCalm:
- Microcurrent stimulator therapy: electrical low frequency that help with relaxation by targeting the earlobs. It also stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis which helps with healing
- Music using binaural beats: two slightly different frequencies played at the same time that promote deep relaxation. Binaural beats are known to have been use to treat PTSD and even help with healing
- Eye cover: helps to concentrate on relaxation and avoid seeing the procedure which can be anxiety-inducing for some patients
- Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA): reduce anxiety, stress and fear by creating serotonin
- L-Theanine: reduce anxiety and induce sleepiness by creating serotonin
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a colorless and odorless gas also known as happy or laughing gas which has been used in dentistry for hundreds of years. When administered, it is a good and safe way of managing anxiety and pain in dentistry. It is delivered through a mask going over the nose and the onset is rapid (less than a few minutes). It can be titrated to find a level of sedation comfortable for you. Once the procedure is complete, the nitrous oxide is stopped, and you feel normal in a matter of a few minutes.
